CONSUME FOODS RICH IN STARCH IN EVERY MAIN COURSE
Bread, spaghetti, pie, rice, bulgur, cereals, pasta, legumes. All these foods contain quantities of carbohydrates. The quantity of carbohydrates that will be included in the diet is important for the general control of levels of glucose in the blood. It is also important that the foods contain or are accompanied by fiber. This will ensure the smooth – normal absorption of carbohydrates from the intestine to the blood, influencing positively the levels of blood sugar in the blood. At the same time, fiber helps towards the correct operation of the intestine and helps you to feel full. Fiber exists in wholemeal bread, bulgur, legumes, potatoes with their skin, vegetables and salads.
HAVE 3 MEALS EACH DAY
Try to include in your program 3 main meals daily. The main meals must be taken at regular time intervals during the day. This will help not only in the control of hunger but also in the effective control of glucose (blood sugar) in the blood.
EAT MORE LEGUMES
For better regulation of diabetes foods such as lentils, beans, louvia, chickpeas, and other legumes, should be included in your diet at least 2-3 times a week.
EAT MORE FISH
Eat at least 2 portions of fish a week, from which the one will be an oily fish (e.g. herring, sardines, salmon, trout, or mackerel). Generally fish and particularly the greasy ones contain a specific type of fat which is called Omega 3. This fat helps in the prevention of heart diseases.
LESSEN THE SALT
A lot of salt can increase the arterial pressure, something that could possibly lead to cerebrals or heart diseases. The reduction of salt can be achieved by the avoidance or the limitation of processed foods that usually contain big quantities of salt. To add more taste to foods try using aromatic spices and seasonings.
REDUCE THE SUGAR AND THE FOODS THAT CONTAIN SUGAR
This does not mean that it should be avoided completely. It can be used for making cakes and pastries as part of a healthy way of life. Furthermore, prefer to have refreshments without sugar, condensed orange juices also without sugar, because their equivalents which contain sugar can have a negative effect on people with high levels of blood sugar.
EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Aim to eat at least five portions a day.
CONSUME ALCOHOLIC DRINKS WITH MEASURE
Most alcoholic drinks contain large quantities of alcohol and they usually taste god too. Consequently, if you are trying to lose weight, it is better to decrease your alcohol intake. The alcohol, also, can create hypoglycemia in individuals who take pills for the control of glucose or insulin. Do not drink if you will drive.
DECREASE THE FOODS RICH IN FAT PARTICULARLY THOSE CONTAINING ANIMAL FAT
This type of fat is connected with heart disease. Prefer to choose insatiable (plant origin) fat and specifically mono-unsaturated olive oil, which is better for the heart. All fats have lots of calories. Fats are the most condensed source of calories. Thus, eating less fat and less food with a high content of fat will help in the loss of weight. How can we reduce the fatty foods in general and particularly those with animal fat?
- Removing completely or adding less butter, margarine, cheese or meat to our diet.
- Choosing dairy products with less fat such as skimmed milk, yoghurt with 0%-2% fat and cheese with low fat.
- Cooking without oil on the grill, in the saucepan or in the oven.
DO NOT GET CARRIED AWAY BY ADVERTISEMENTS FOR SPECIAL DIABETIC PRODUCTS
These foods do not have any gain in the control of blood sugar in the blood. On the contrary:
-
- They cost too much money.
- They contain many calories and sometimes they contain the same quantity of fat as their equivalent regular products.
- They can cause irritation of the intestine.
- They may influence the levels of blood sugar in the blood.

PY-TEST – BREATH TEST
Py-test (13C-urea capsules) is intended for detection of gastric urease as an aid in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection in the human stomach.
The urease enzyme is not present in mammalian cells, so the presence of urease in the stomach is evidence that bacteria are present.the presence of urease is not specific for H.pylori, but other bacteria are not usually found in the stomach.
To detect H.pylori, urea labeled with 13C is swallowed by the patient. If gastric urease from H.pylori is present, urea is split to form CO2 and NH3 at the interface between th egastric epithelium and lumen and 13CO2 is absorbed into the blood and exhaled in the breath. Following ingestion of the capsules by a patient with H.pylori, 13CO2 excretion in the breath peaks between 25 and 30 minutes and declines thereafter. The 13CO2 is measured using HELIFAN plus: a fischer analyser instrument.
